Teaching practice office

Mrs. M. Tsolele is the coordinator of teaching practise office.

Teaching Practice/Internship is a school-based experience for student teachers through which they are socialised into the profession. Student-teachers are placed in schools that are registered with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in the ten districts of Lesotho. The schools that are selected for TP should be easily accessible and are assigned by location to clusters called Sites. Currently there are twenty-two (22) sites throughout the country. The teaching practice office enters into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with each host school to agree on the expectations about the teaching practice placement of student-teachers.

Through TP, student-teachers are given an opportunity to put into practice the skills and teaching strategies most of which they acquired theoretically in their first year of study. They are also required to engage in extra-curricular activities. The student-teachers are enabled to play a role of a teacher holistically in a real school setting. During this time the student-teachers are professionally supervised by experienced teachers in their respective host schools. These experienced teachers serve as cooperating teachers or mentors under the overall monitoring of the school principal. The student-teachers are also supervised, supported and assessed by the College lecturers who visit them in their practicing schools. The assessment of student-teachers is done both academically and professionally.

The teaching practice office coordinates all these activities with the help of the College faculties through representatives who form the teaching practice committee. For the full-time pre-service diploma programmes, namely Diploma in Education Primary (DEP) and the Diploma in Education Secondary (DES), TP follows a sandwich model where the internship is undertaken in the second year of study. There is an intention to reduce the duration of TP from a whole year to a lesser period. For the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (CECE) and the DEP through the Distance Teacher Training Programme (DTEP) which are distance education programmes, TP is embedded in the whole programme duration.
